__TOC__
Summary
Every study of mitochondrial (mt) function in human tissues is faced with EAGLE as the essential background conditions characterizing the study groups, the individual patient or subject. A general data base on mitochondrial function is required to set any specific study into the multidimensional context of EAGLE. The EAGLE database on mitochondrial physiology may be compared to established genomic data bases on human evolution and mitochondrial medicine on one hand, and physiological data bases of sport science on the other hand. A mtEAGLE data base does not exist, is necessary to relate results of individual studies and must be operated on a global level. Various steps should be taken towards establishing the mtEAGLE database.

First steps
# Initiate a consortium of research groups involved in studies of mitochondrial function in human tissues, with a focus on (i) muscle biopsies, (ii) blood cells, and (iii) fat tissue. These groups include specialists on sports science, nutrition and life style, ageing and human diseases.
# Organize a series of start-up meetings of members of the consortium with a minimum of added costs. This might be possible by contacting mitochondrial societies to support the mtEAGLE consortium by integrating relevant sessions in their regular meetings. Satellite workshops might extend the activities of the consortium.
# Contact organizations operating comparable genomic and physiological databases.
# Contact funding bodies towards funding the initiation and operation of the mtEAGLE database.

* EAGLE was discussed at various meetings in 2014, including the O2k-Workshop in Philadelphia, the UMDF meeting in Pitzburgh, US; EUROMIT in Tampere, Finland, EBEC in Lisbon, Portugal, MiP in Obergurgl, Austria, and ASMRM in Taipei, Taiwan. Your input, evaluation and suggestions are most welcome. The following list, summarizing contacted colleagues and involved research groups, may expand rapidly. The MitoGlobal framework offers an Open Access/Open Innovation approach. - 2014-11-18 Gnaiger Erich
