Problems with USB to serial adapters

Problem: The used computer does not have a serial port and we use an O2k Series A to D, therefore a USB to serial converter has to be used. However, DatLab is not able to connect with the O2k.

To find out the exact location of the problem:

- use the Windows device manager to find the correct COM port attached to the USB to serial converter.

A successfully installed USB to serial converter seen in the device manager of Windows XP.

If you can not find this COM port:

  • the driver for the USB to serial converter has not been installed on the computer or the wrong version has been installed. Let the Windows find the appropriate driver specific for your Windows version via the Windows Update (depending on the Windows settings of driver installation - it's either automatic action after inserting the USB to serial converter to the USB port or it could be recalled via the Windows device manager) or install from a CD coming with the converter (bear in mind that the drivers on CD could be outdated and/or for different Windows version). Check that the USB to serial converter and the attached COM port are now visible in the Windows device manager.
  • there is a hardware problem with the connection - try to manually disconnect and connect the cables again until you can see the COM port attached to the USB to serial converter again. Some USB to serial converters have a rubber rim actually pushing the cable out of the connection. This can be solved by removing the rubber rim with a knife.

Once you know the number of the COM port that is attached to the USB to serial converter

  • restart DatLab
  • select the COM port you have seen in the device manager and try again.
  • you might have to hit the connect button two or three times for the first time connection

If everything fails, use a different computer to try to connect so that we can exclude any problems on the O2k side.
